Biodiversity

The 110 hectares of Parc de la Citadelle make it the largest green space in the city, home to a variety of often unexpected fauna and flora.

Thanks to large-scale projects such as Luciole, nature projects organised by associations, as well as the daily activity of Lille’s gardeners, the quality of the environment has improved and biodiversity is developing again.

Each space has been designed to promote the continued existence or return of ordinary or remarkable species, through creating habitats in the fortifications, restoring the wetlands, cutting back vegetation and conserving dead wood etc). This rigorous management has seen the return of the kingfisher, the large red damselfly and the blunt-flowered bulrush to Parc de la Citadelle.
